Once upon a time in a little Southeast Asian country sometime about Christmas 1965 a young U.S. Combat Engineer was spending his first Christmas away from home.  It had been another long workday driving up Thunder Road ending at some unknown outpost.  The sun had long disappeared into the mountains mess call had been missed so it was C-Rations cold C-rations.  In the tent there were several bunks with no bedding in a corner was a small artificial Christmas tree.  The young soldier asked a passing soldier "what day is it"? "Christmas" Like Scrooge he thought, "I did not miss it" the soldier also said that there would be chapel service "where"? The information had been passed on.

He listened to the services but was more interested in what was going to happen the next day.  The Chaplin asked if anyone knew a Christmas song no one stood up.  So he got up and started "Melekalike Maka is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas day" from in the back came another voice they sang together.  Then as they ended the voice stated another song this time in Hawaiian a song that he had never heard.  When the song was over more soldiers got up the chapel was filled with song.

They got together two guys from Hawaii to talk and enjoy each other's company he was from the Big Island Hilo side.  They talked till late and parted happy that they had meet someone from Hawaii that Christmas Day.  The engineer came back to that outpost seven days later and went out to find a New Years companion.  That was not to happen the Company clerk informed him that his friend had been "killed in action".  He spent that night alone in wondered not how his friend had been killed but what would be his parent's reaction to his death.  Threw these years each Christmas he wonder what his friend would have been would we still be friends?  Mostly he wondered what was that song so he started to listen to his Hawaiian music.  It would not be that easy to find he had only heard the song once but there was a special verse that he would not forget.  One day at the music store he purchased a CD South Sea Island Magic with Moe Keale their song number 10 my Christmas song from a good friend longed missed and never forgotten.

I love all animals but I draw the line when we care more for the four legged beast that you call family.  What do you say when asked "Are we our brothers keeper".  "Yes" we are, we have the example of a person that had been beaten and left on the side of the road.  All others walked by only one had  stopped to give aid.
